Moms on Call 8-16 Week Sleep Transitions and Routine

The 12-week mark is an exciting time for both you and your little one as several transitions unfold together. From bidding farewell to the swaddle to witnessing purposeful muscle movements and the promise of longer nighttime sleep, it’s a period filled with changes. Here’s your guide to managing the 8-16 week Moms on Call routine with a few grace period adjustments as you inch closer to the 4-6 month routine.

Routine: Adjustments, Grace Periods and Developmental Transitions

  • Continue following the 8-16 week Moms on Call routine. Be ready to incorporate 15-minute grace periods to extend nap and feeding times gradually.
  • Grace Period Example: Start your pre-nap routine at 8:30 a.m. with a diaper change, storytime, and snuggles. Aim to put your baby down closer to 8:45 a.m.
  • Adapting Feed Times: Similarly, consider adjusting feeding times by 15-minutes, allowing for a smooth transition. For instance, if you usually feed at 10 a.m., start the feed around 10:15 a.m.

Naptime Environment: Creating a Safe Sleep Environment

  • Sensory Elements: Ensure a conducive nap environment with slight natural light, a sound machine, and comfortable footed pajamas. If your baby is not rolling, you may choose to keep the swaddle for an extra week or two after nighttime removal.
  • Nap Structure: Notice the emerging pattern of naps settling into one okayish nap and one better nap, often accompanied by 1-2 shorter naps.

Bedtime Routine: Winding Down for the Night

  • Nighttime Ritual: Initiate the bedtime routine with a calming bath, followed by a diaper change and cozy pajamas. Engage in a storytime session, embracing precious moments of snuggles.
  • Optimal Sleep Environment: Create an ideal nighttime sleep setting with a dark room, a comforting sound machine, a crib or bassinet, and footed pajamas.
  • Bedtime Window: Aim for a bedtime between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Allow flexibility for personalization based on your family’s unique situation. Consult with your Moms on Call Consultant for personalized adjustments.

Morning Kickoff: Starting the Day with Purpose

  • Early Start: Regardless of your baby’s nighttime sleep progress, begin the day with intention and purpose around 6:45 a.m. to 7 a.m. Adjust the start time as needed to align with your family’s work schedules.
