Breastfeeding and Pumping: It Doesn’t Have to Be All or Nothing!

Breastfeeding or pumping can be challenging (we see you, mama!), but here’s some great news—it doesn’t have to be all or nothing! You can absolutely mix breastfeeding, pumping, and formula feeding to make it work for your family. Whether you're looking to supplement with formula or just give yourself a little extra breathing room, we've got you covered.

Here are 6 simple, encouraging ways to supplement with formula while still breastfeeding or pumping.

1. Breastfeed First, Then Offer Formula

Start by breastfeeding and then follow up with a bottle of formula. This is a fantastic option if your milk supply is lower than you’d like. Your baby gets the connection of direct feeding, and formula helps fill up those tiny tummies with the calories they need. Usually this looks like nursing for 15-20 mins then offering that bottle for 15-20 mins.

2. Breastfeed First, Then Offer a Mix of Pumped Milk and Formula

Not quite ready to say goodbye to breastfeeding but want to wean a bit? Combine pumped milk with formula after a breastfeeding session. Your baby gets the best of both worlds—breastmilk and formula—and you're easing the transition! This is great to nurse on one breast for 15-20 mins then offer the bottle of 50/50 breastmilk and formula for 15-20 mins.

3. Pumped Milk First, Then Formula

If you’re exclusively pumping, try offering pumped milk first, followed by a formula bottle. This way, your baby gets every precious drop of breastmilk, and formula steps in to ensure they’re full and satisfied.

4. Mix Pumped Milk and Formula in One Bottle

You can mix breastmilk and formula together in any ratio! Combine them in one bottle to simplify feeding time. Just remember to use it within 24 hours or follow the breastmilk’s expiration date—whichever comes first. This is great to extend the duration of available breastmilk.

5. Breastfeed or Pump Every Other Feed, and Use Formula in Between

Need a little break? (We totally get it!) You can alternate between breastfeeding or pumping and offering formula at the next feed. This is a perfect way to gradually wean or reduce the number of times you pump without sacrificing your baby’s nutrition.

6. Store Pumped Milk for Later and Use Formula Now

Save one feed’s worth of breastmilk for another time and offer formula instead. This can stretch out your breastmilk supply for when you need it most—like that rainy day or during the weaning process.

You’ve Got This, Mama!

Remember, it’s not about doing all of one thing—it’s about finding what works for you. By supplementing with formula, you’re giving yourself the space for a mental and physical break, which can help extend your breastfeeding journey. Keep going, and know you’re doing an amazing job!
