The second month with your little one is full of surprises, from the first purposeful smiles to more consistent feeding and sleeping patterns. Whether you're a first-time parent, 5th time parent, adopting, fostering, or welcoming your baby through other family dynamics, this guide will walk you through the next four weeks with encouragement, milestones, and practical tips. Let’s keep the fun going as your baby hits exciting new stages of development!

Week 5: Smile Time!

By now, you're starting to see some magical moments—yes, those are real smiles that make all the sleepless nights worthwhile! Your baby is more alert, and bath time might be one of their favorite parts of the day.

  • Milestones: Baby is starting to give you intentional smiles (some may still be unintentional, but we’ll take them all!). Bath time becomes a regular part of your routine. Check out Moms on Call’s Bath Time Video for some fun tips and tricks to make bath time a breeze. You may be getting 4-5 hour stretches of sleep at night!

  • Pediatrician Reminder: It’s a great time to start writing down any questions or concerns for your 2-month pediatrician appointment. Questions about vaccines, sleep routines, or feeding? Jot them down now!

  • Fun Tip: Celebrate those smiles! Make faces, play peek-a-boo, and talk to your baby. They love hearing your voice, and it's a great way to bond. Get up close when changing the diaper or getting dressed. Wide eyes and exaggerated facial expressions will help them to engage.

  • Encouragement: You’ve survived the first month and are finding your rhythm. Even though sleep is still hard to come by, these little moments are proof you’re doing an amazing job!

Week 6: More Sounds, More Cuddles

At 6 weeks, your baby is showing more personality! You’ll hear sweet coos and might even get a little babbling. Their movements are becoming more intentional, and they love seeing your face up close.

  • Milestones: Baby is starting to recognize your voice and may coo or babble in response. It’s also a great time to keep working on Moms on Call’s swaddling technique — a snug swaddle can still provide comfort and better sleep.

  • Pediatrician Reminder: Notice if the baby is starting to spit up more frequently or has any feeding concerns. Keep track of anything you’d like to discuss with your pediatrician at that 2-month checkup.

  • Fun Tip: Use those chatty moments to have full-blown conversations! Make funny noises, sing, and watch your baby’s face light up. They may even start to imitate your facial expressions!

  • Encouragement: You’re settling into a routine and getting to know your baby’s personality more each day. Celebrate the little things, like the first coo or the first stretch of sleep longer than 4-5 hours. You’re doing an incredible job!

Week 7: Becoming More Mobile

Watch out—your little one is starting to move! Baby may start rolling from their back to their side during playtime and you may even get a tummy to back roll unintentionally so keep a close eye and never place them on a bed or surface they can roll off of. This is also when you’ll notice they seem to want to eat all the time—hello, growth spurt!

  • Milestones: Unintentional rolling may begin this week, so keep a close eye on them during tummy time! Baby might seem extra hungry—this is common during growth spurts which seem to happen every 3-4 weeks.

  • Pediatrician Reminder: Add this question to your list-Do you have a dosage sheet handout for over-the-counter medications by weight if needed after the vaccinations?

  • Fun Tip: Start some fun tummy time challenges! Change up the scenery, use a rolled-up towel under their arms, or lay on the floor with them. The more variety, the more interesting tummy time will be.

  • Encouragement: Your baby’s growing strength and mobility are something to celebrate! It’s okay if things feel hectic during growth spurts—remember, it’s temporary. You’re doing great!

Week 8: Time for the Doctor

Your baby is officially 2 months old—can you believe it? The 8-week mark is a big milestone because your baby’s development is progressing beautifully. It’s also time for that first round of vaccines.

  • Milestones: At 8 weeks, your baby is more alert during awake times and might stay up for 1-1.5 hours at a stretch. They’re starting to track objects with their eyes, recognize faces, and respond to sounds. You might even get some giggles soon! If you have not started the 8-16 week Moms on Call routine it is time!

  • Pediatrician Reminder: This week, you'll visit the pediatrician for your baby’s 2-month checkup and their first round of vaccinations. Be sure to ask any questions you’ve noted down. Your pediatrician will guide you on what to expect after the shots and may recommend an acetaminophen dosage for post-vaccine discomfort.

  • Fun Tip: Make the most of baby’s awake time! Play some music, dance around the house, or take the baby on a stroller walk. These interactions help stimulate your baby’s developing senses and are so much fun for both of you!

  • Encouragement: You’ve reached the 2-month mark, and you’re doing an amazing job! Don’t stress about the doctor’s visit—it’s just another milestone on this beautiful journey. Take a deep breath and give yourself credit for navigating these first few months with so much love and care.

End of Week 8: Two Months Old!
