Welcome to Moms on Call’s video: Baby Basics: Proper Nail Clipping [Introduction music and imagery displays] Hi, I'm Laura Hunter with Moms on Call and today we'll be showing you how to clip those nails. I know that it is one of the scariest things to attempt to do, but with these tips, we'll try to make it pretty simple. You will need a pair of nail clippers that have a grip on the end. That will allow you to have something to hold on to. Let's get started. So what we want to do is put the baby on your lap with their back against your chest. Now, one of the best times to do this is right after they eat, when they're asleep, right after a bath. We're going to take that little hand. We're going to put those fingers over your index finger. We're going to roll that skin back. You're going to take the edge of your nail clipper, slide that right up underneath that nail, that just helps to push the skin down and it makes a little white line, so you know exactly where to clip. Then you can go back in and clip the white off. You can usually get this done in one or two clips. Sometimes babies are wiggly and get really fussy and you may not get all 10 clipped at one time. That's okay. Come back to them a little bit later and you can finish getting those done.
