Sun and Water Safety

Warmer weather is here, and it’s only getting hotter! As we look for ways to cool down in our backyards, neighborhood pools, or a trip to the beach, sun, and water safety are a must.

Let’s jump right into Moms on Call’s top water and sun safety tips for keeping cool this summer.

Effective supervision in the sun and in the water

Adult supervision is the most critical line of defense. No level of aquatic skill or floating device can replace active supervision.

CPR

As parents, we rarely want to think about the worst-case scenario. But the only thing worse than having a medical emergency on your hands is not knowing what to do when one arises. At Moms on Call, we believe in helping parents have the skills and tools they need to respond quickly and skillfully. In this course, you’ll gain access to expert-level instruction that’s easy to understand and apply or use (if you ever have to). Keep life-saving skills at the top of your mind with this incredibly valuable course from Moms on Call.

Note: The Moms on Call Infant and Child CPR, Choking, and First Aid Online Course is not a certification course. It is an accessible, easy-to-follow instructional guide for parents and caregivers.

Shade and sunscreen

  • Apply sunscreen according to package directions and use well-known products suitable for children.
  • Be sure to apply sunscreen before and after the baby takes a dip!
  • Try and keep babies shaded, especially babies under 6 months of age.
    • Look for or bring along an umbrella or beach tent at public spots.
    • Bring along a sun hat for the baby to keep on while they are both in and out of the water.

Water safety training

  • MOC recommends babies 6 months of age and older have water safety training.
  • Always drain inflatable/plastic pools or splash toys after use.
  • Home pool fences and alarms
    • All doors and windows leading to the pool should be locked and alarmed.
    • Install a permanent 4-sided fence with self-locking gates. The pool fence should be 3-5 feet from the edge.

So, whether you are wading in an inflatable pool or floating around with your little one, we hope these sun and water safety tips give you peace of mind and make fun in the sun as enjoyable as it can be!
